8th Grade Graduation Party

The 8th grade Class of 2019 celebrated their upcoming graduation, along with the 7th grade class, at a circus-themed party in Arcadia. Our 7th and 8th grade students and parents worked hard all year to fund-raise for this beautiful celebration. Dancing, karaoke, virtual reality pods, video games, a photo booth, air hockey, a candy bar, and a BBQ dinner made the event unforgettable. To cap off the night, they showed a memory video of each graduating student growing up over the last 11 years. Special thanks go to Event Chairs Janice Wong, Michelle Welsh, and Grace Wen who coordinated the party.  Thanks also go to Penny Frick for organizing the San Sei lunches, which helped to bring in 1/4 of the funds needed for the graduation party.

The Class of 2015 College Send-Off Reunion

Twenty-two members of Clairbourn’s Class of 2015, and some of their parents, returned to campus for a reunion celebrating their completion of high school and their new adventures in college. They enjoyed yearbooks, a breakfast buffet and time for visiting with each other before joining the Awards Assembly where they shared their future plans with teachers, current students, and parents in attendance. Afterwards, they spent time on the playground, visiting classrooms, and speaking to their former teachers who were thrilled to see them all grown up.

Class of 2019 Graduation Remarks from Head of School Dr. Patzlaff

The Class of 2019 is special in many ways. They demonstrated creativity when some of them wrote and produced an original song for the whole middle school to perform in the Thanksgiving assembly. They demonstrated generosity when class members donated original art for display in the Manor House. They demonstrated tenacity and sportsmanship when they won the league volleyball championship this year. They showed leadership when they started new traditions, like the international lunch, that bring the school together. They showed heart when they found they had exceeded their fundraising goals and chose to donate the funds to a deserving charity. They showed scholarship when class members earned significant merit scholarships at many of the high schools they will attend next year. This is an amazing group of individuals who, together embody the mission of Clairbourn, Creating scholars and leaders with heart.

8th Grade Cardboard Regatta

On Tuesday, the 8th grade class participated in the annual Cardboard Regatta—a cardboard boat-making and racing competition held in the school pool.  The eighth-graders studied the physics of buoyancy and tested their understanding by designing and building cardboard passenger boats.   Working in teams of 4 to 5 students,  they used sheets of cardboard, 6 rolls of duct tape, and a thin sheet of plastic wrap.  During the race, five points was earned for every team member that crossed the pool in their boat. Coming in fourth place was the yellow team with half a lap. Tied for third place was the teal team and the pink team. Each of those boats carried two people one length of the pool, for a total of 10 points each.  Coming in second place was the red team. Their team earned 35 points.

The Annual Art Show

Artwork conceptualized and crafted by students during the school year were on display in the Annual Art Show, which took over the entire Multi-Purpose Building on the same night as the spring Open House. The expansive walls of the MPB were filled with hundreds of paintings, drawings, prints, and mixed-media works, while the center areas contained ceramic displays and additional groupings of more paintings and drawings. All grades had work in the show, and students in Grades K through 5 had at least two pieces plus a ceramic project on display.

Clairbourn appreciates the hard work of art teacher Hayley Ball and her team of volunteers who helped put on this impressive show. Her installers were middle school students Kristy S., Jessie K., Samantha F., Estella B., Barbra C., Piper K., Madison B., and Roxy P., along with the maintenance staff, and music teacher Mrs. Kiertzner.

Open House Event

Families turned out in large numbers for the Clairbourn Open House event on Tuesday May 21. The purpose was two-fold; to view special projects in the students’ current classrooms and to meet the teachers and preview the projects in the upcoming grade levels. Specialists for music, foreign language, and library were also on hand to show off their learning spaces and to show student activities from the 2018-2019 school year. The middle school was also open, and parents got to see science projects and had a chance to ask questions about curriculum, grading, teacher expectations, and much, much more!

Clairbourn’s Willy Wonka Jr. Carnival

Fond family memories were formed at the Willy Wonka Jr. themed Carnival held at Clairbourn School in early May. The weather was perfect for getting drenched in the dunk tank or sampling the super-soaker maze, running the inflatable obstacle course, or winning prizes in the games-of-skill booths that lined the field. Lots of girls and guys found their way to the Beauty Bar booth to spray fun colors in their hair, others enjoyed the Willy Wonka photo booth, and the smallest children took delight in the simple pleasure of rolling down the hill adjacent to the field with their friends.
